This will be different depending upon how far along you were, whether or not you had a D&C, and how well you take care of yourself. A D&C is a surgical procedure that removes the embryo or fetus, placenta and other related tissue from a woman’s uterus. The D&C is typically performed under general anesthesia, and recovery generally takes one to two weeks. The best thing you can do during this time is listen to your body and take it easy.

Surgical management of the miscarriage is not always needed. After a miscarriage or D&C, some women experience heavy bleeding or blood clots for up to two weeks after the event. Period-like pains or crampy pain can be expected during this time as well.
