In August 2023, we found out we were expecting our third baby. We nicknamed the baby “Peanut” and carried the excitement of our growing family everywhere we went. Looking back, I’m so grateful for the memories we unknowingly made together. Disney World, Christmas lights, family trips, decorating a nursery, and dreaming about the day we would finally meet the baby who had already completed our family.
About halfway through my pregnancy, those dreams were met with uncertainty. We learned our baby had severe intrauterine growth restriction caused by placental insufficiency, and not long after, I developed severe preeclampsia. Every reassuring heartbeat, every encouraging ultrasound, and every day she stayed safely inside me became a victory. We learned to celebrate time in a way we never had before.
On January 25, 2024, at just 25 weeks and 4 days, Lily Leigh entered the world weighing only 15.3 ounces. She was tiny, but she was fierce. From the very beginning, she amazed us. She was such a fighter. She loved to snuggle skin-to-skin, wrap her tiny fingers around mine, and had the sweetest little cry. She taught us that strength isn’t measured in pounds or inches.
On the morning of February 7, I gave Lily what would become her last bath. I kissed her goodbye, told her I loved her, said I would see her tomorrow and left to pick up her siblings from school, fully expecting to see her again the next morning. Just a few hours later, our world changed forever. Lily unexpectedly died in the NICU. She lived for only 13 days, but every one of those days was filled with love, hope, and memories our family will carry forever.
Lily will always be our daughter. Her life cannot be measured by the number of days she was here, but by the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the place she will always hold in our family. She will forever be our baby girl, and I will always be grateful that I was chosen to be her mom.
