My husband Larry and I met in elementary school. We didn’t become friends until high school and began dating our senior year, in October 2006.

We got engaged in June 2013, and we’re married in October 2014.

In 2015 after 9 years together we decided it was time to start trying for a baby. We had just bought our home, and adopted our puppy, Anna, and felt it was time to take the next step!

After several months of TTC, I reached out to my OB and was told that it’s normal for things to take time and that we should just keep trying. After nearly 2 years of TTC, I switched to a new OB who did some initial testing for us. Based on these tests we were told that our chances of having a baby was less than 5%.

In January 2019 we were ready to reach out to one more doctor for advice. This time we met with Seattle Reproductive Medicine. Our first appointment was amazing, they reviewed our past tests, our medical history, etc. and told us that in no way did they believe we were 100% infertile based on the numbers we had. They advised we try conceiving by adding some medications, and then if that didn’t work we could try IUI. They were fairly confident IUI would bring us a baby.

After four months on the prescribed medication with no luck, we opted to try IUI. We had our first IUI on July 4, 2019.

The TWW after IUI was the longest two weeks ever. On the morning of July 17 I couldn’t wait any longer and I tested before going to work. I was SHOCKED when I saw two lines, a BFP! We were finally going to have a baby! I told Larry that night that we were pregnant by putting a big sister scarf on our dog, he was so excited!

We had two weeks of pregnancy bliss, and then on July 31 I woke up with cramping and started spotting. I called Larry at work and he came home. We then went to the doctor for bloodwork and a few hours later our worst fears were confirmed, we had lost the baby.

SRM suggested we continue with IUI several more times, with adding some new medications. We did five more IUIs, several of which were delayed due to the COVID pandemic. Our last IUI was in July 2020.

After our final IUI we met with our Dr. and discussed our options moving forward, deciding IVF was best for us. In January 2021 we signed our IVF contract and paid our deposit. We had some delays after signing the initial paperwork due to finances and COVID.

In October 2022 we began STIMS and did our egg retrieval in November 2022. At our retrieval we were bummed to only get 5 eggs, 3 of which were mature. To our great surprise, all 3 eggs fertilized, and then made it to freeze, and then all 3 were tested as PGT normal! We were beyond thankful to have 3 chances at a healthy baby.

On January 26, 2023, we had our embryo transfer. We found out at transfer that the embryo was a boy. Seeing our perfect embryo was the best day of our lives yet! 5 days later I lost all patience and decided to test at home. The test immediately turned positive! I ended up taking 8 tests that day before telling Larry the great news. 4 days later our beta confirmed that the transfer had worked and we were pregnant. We are due with our miracle baby, Alexander, on October 13!

Karen’s Story

My journey to motherhood started like many others, full of excitement and the assumption that it would just work out. Within three months of trying, we were pregnant. We were overjoyed. But that joy didn’t last long. Around five weeks, I miscarried. We were heartbroken, but we tried to stay hopeful. Then, the very next month, I was pregnant again. It felt like a miracle, like maybe the first loss had just been a terrible fluke. But at six weeks, we lost that pregnancy too. That was the moment I realized this wasn’t random. I went to the doctor looking for answers, but I kept hearing the same thing. Everything looks normal. Sometimes this just happens. Just keep trying. I never accepted that, because deep down it never felt right. Loss changes you. There is no way around it. When you lose a pregnancy, you don’t just lose a moment in time. You lose the dreams you had already started building. You imagine birthdays that will never happen, tiny hands you never got to hold, and a future that suddenly disappears. The grief is hard to explain unless you have lived through it. It is the grief that keeps…
