Books were an important part of my life while growing up. My mom taught me how to read at a young age. I have fond memories of her taking us to the library and picking out books.
My favorite books growing up were Three Yellow Dogs and Too Many Books.
Here is a list of some of the best children’s books for kids twelve and under. They are listed by recommended ages. Hopefully they will inspire your kids to read as well!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Recommended Ages: 0-3 Years
No list would be complete without The Very Hungry Caterpillar! This has been a favorite of both my son and my daughter.
The Pout-Pout Fish
Recommended Ages: 0-4 Years
A book about a grumpy fish who learns to have fun and be happy.
Leapfrog Learning Friends 100 Words Book
Recommended Ages: 18 Months-4 years
This teaches children 100 common words by saying the words and singing songs. The words can be heard in either English or Spanish.
Never Let a Unicorn Scribble
Recommended Ages: 3-7 Years
This book tells the story of a girl who uses her imagination to get her unicorn to scribble. The book is all about using your imagination and creativity.
What Should Danny Do? (The Power To Choose Series)
Recommended Ages: 3 Years and Up
This series allows children to make choices. The story changes with each choice that is made. There is a good and a bad choice for each decision that has to be made. My son really loves these books!

What Should Darla Do?
The Wonky Donky
Recommended Ages: 3-5 Years
A silly story about a donkey. It will be sure to make your child laugh!
The Office: A Day at Dunder Mifflin Elementary
Recommended Ages: 4-8 Years
Of course I had to include the book from my favorite show! This reimagines the characters as elementary school students. Michael tries to be the best line leader.
Fairy Cornbread
Recommended Ages: 4-9 Years
This book is written by a mom who is local to me. The story is about a little girl who gets fairy powers after eating her grandmother’s cornbread.
A Kids Book About
Recommended Ages: 5+
A Kids Book About has books about a variety of topics. These are topics typically considered hard to talk about with children. The books are designed specifically to help start the conversation about these hard topics.
Belonging
This book helps empower children to love themselves. It teaches children how to belong and accept themselves.
Racism
This book was written to explain what racism is and how it makes people feel when they experience it.

Recommended Ages: 8-12 Years
These were some of my favorite books as a child! I think I read all of them. Now, they have made them more modern and updated them as graphic novels.

I know! The Office is literally my favorite show, so was so excited when I saw this book!
I loved the babysitters club!! It’s a great choice for kids – although I’m super intrigued by this office children’s book 🤔🤣

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is such a great book! We read it all the time! I also love Mouse Mess, Those Darn Squirrels, and The Tawny Scrawny Lion. So many good books for families to enjoy together!
